Cover Reveal and Interview with Alison DeLuca!

Today I have had the priveledge and pleaure to interview a special guest and wonderful author. Welcome Alison DeLuca!

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Danielle!

Alison, please tell my readers a little bit about your latest book.

The Lamplighter’s Special is the third book in the Crown Phoenix series. Each book is its own separate adventure, so if you haven’t read The Night Watchmen Express or Devil’s Kitchen you can pick up with Lamplighter.

My books are steampunk adventure, which means that they have steam-driven technology (typewriters instead of computers). I love the challenges of that genre – I had to develop my own technology to power my own little world.

That sounds so cool! What is your favorite part of being an author? What is your least favorite part?

I love every part of being an author. I adore writing the first draft, love editing and rewrites, and formatting for Kindle and print. My favorite part is meeting other authors; they are so kind and supportive, for the most part, as well as extremely funny.

The hardest part is getting book signings. That involves actually being a salesperson, and I’m not very good at that.

When writing do you adhere to a strict outline or do you allow your characters to take detours?

I’ve done it both ways. The Night Watchman Express was written with a strict outline, and Lamplighter’s was written with a much looser
structure. At the end of Lamplighter’s, the characters really surprised me with what happened to them. I won’t give away any spoilers, but I will give this hint: the very last word of my book is NOT a spelling error!

I can’t wait to read it! Is there a message in your novels that you want readers to grasp?

Great question! I create adventure – steam pulp fiction – so my books aren’t theme heavy at all. However, I always have a scene where a character uses the power of prayer. I don’t mean prayer tied to any specific religion, but the kind of prayer that comes from the bottom of your soul when you are in terrible trouble. I firmly believe that prayer is a very powerful thing. It’s magic that really exists.

What book are you currently reading at the moment? What do you think of it so far?

I’m in the middle of six amazing books. They range from 1Q84, by Haruki Murakami, to Darkness Rising by Ross Kitson.

What are three things not very many people know about you.

1. I second-guess myself all the time.
2. I’d spend all winter on the ski slopes, if I could.
3. And I’d move to upstate New York tomorrow, given the chance.

What is something you love but are embarrassed to share with others?

I love pop music – like, really poppy pop music. I’ll listen to Brittany, Justin, Selena… It’s a guilty pleasure…

If you had a superpower what would it be?

I would be the amazing Owl Lady and never have to sleep. Then maybe I could get the writing and the laundry done.

If you ruled the world for one day, what would you do?

Hm. I’d love to make teachers as important as professional athletes, since it was my teachers who inspired me. A really great teacher is a very special person.
